Course Outline - Homiletics

This course is about preaching, the why’s and how’s of sermon preparation. You may never envision yourself preaching to a church or even in a small setting, but you can never tell how God may want to use you someday. It makes sense then to do some preparation towards this then!

Course Description
This course introduces the students to the basics of preaching. The fundamentals of sermon preparation to the actual preaching of that sermon will be addressed. These principles form the foundation for various styles of sermon delivery.

Course Objectives
Cognitive: The learner will
1. become familiar with and aware of sermon construction and patterns of
preparation and delivery
2. understand the special emphasis on the manner in which the Word of God is delivered
3. become cognizant of the role of the minister and his/her responsibility
4. minister before an audience and go through the process of critiquing the sermon under the supervision of the course facilitator

Affective: The learner will
1. personally commit to being faithful to the calling of God
2. become personally motivated to invest time in the study of God’s Word
3. develop an attitude of readiness to apply God’s Word to daily life

Conative: The learner will
1. develop skill in historical background research for the sermon
2. develop skill in detailed observation of the text including grammatical analysis and word study
3. develop the skill in accurate presentation of sermon text
4. develop skill in applying the biblical text to the contemporary situations in life

Who should attend?
1. Those who feel that they might one day be used to preach or teach in a church or cell setting
2. Cell leaders and Assistants
3. Those who want to help others / encourage others in preaching and teaching
4. Those doing this program for credit - (its compulsory!)
