The Golden Key

September 12th, 2010 by chesedkel

“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13

“When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.” Romans 6:20-22

The Chinese have a tradition of blessing a youth with a gold necklace and a golden key on his 21st birthday. Not only do they value the worth of gold, but this gift also symbolizes the child’s freedom from parental control and his transition into adulthood. The child is then granted independence for his own life. He has to make his own decisions now and be responsible for them. He cannot rely on his parents to make major decisions for him anymore.

When I received the golden key from my parents and learned about its significance from my dad, it dawned on me that with this freedom comes greater responsibility. Well, not that I wasn’t set free before turning 21; I did exercise a great deal of autonomy during my late teenage years and into the early 20s. Having this measure of freedom granted to me does not mean that I can simply do whatever I want. I still have to manage my relationships right; I cannot go drinking alcohol in pubs and clubs; I cannot gamble; I simply cannot participate in things that the world says you can do when you turn 21.

My dad trusts me to exercise this freedom with maturity by being able to discern between right and wrong. He was taking a risk by letting me ‘go’, but he still chanced the risk because he believes that I will continue to live righteously. As I meditate on this message behind the golden key, a pledge becomes seared deeply into my heart to always do the right thing and live as a blameless man of God.

Just as my dad had given me the golden key to freedom, Jesus had also given me a precious, invaluable gift of freedom. Before I was a Christian, I was free to do whatever vile thing that I liked without being accountable to anybody. I believed that my actions were justifiable and they did not merit any punishment. Truth of the matter is, those sins made me an extremely disgusting little worm in God’s sight. Such a vile creature should not be allowed into heaven lest it pollutes its gold-paved streets. Rather, it should be discarded into the great garbage bin called hell, where fires burn mercilessly and torment goes on unceasingly. I am very ashamed of my sinful past, but now I am free from the power of sin because Christ had set me free by dying on the cross to suffer the pain that I deserved to suffer. He descended to hell and wrestled away the keys to its black iron gates. Then he ascended to earth and heaven to give all of us the key to His heart so that we can live in purity and truth, and live for eternity with Him in the new Earth that He is going to create.

Jesus still covers us with His grace today as a way of telling us that our sins had been atoned for and we shall never be punished for anything. What a sweet freedom! However, having such a freedom doesn’t mean that we are allowed to go back to our old sins and indulge in their momentary pleasures. Jesus gave us this gift with trust, trusting that we will not turn back to our old ways but instead live on righteously for Him. He trusts us not to compromise on our faith and commitment to Him. In doing so, He was actually putting His reputation at stake. Most of us know how horrible it would be like if non-Christians around us begin to speak badly of God if they see us indulging in sin. We are not to take Jesus’ mercy for granted by sinning intentionally and claim that we are permitted to do anything that pleases us because we are being covered by His grace. We have been set free from sin to become slaves to righteousness as His mercy compels us to love Him and serve one another with this new-found freedom.

Wretched is he who abuses his freedom by doing acts that defile his soul. Blessed is he who uses his freedom with wisdom to serve the God he loves!
