Unsung Heroes

August 2nd, 2010 by chesedkel

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.” (Hebrews 13:17)

The church often makes mention about blessing our ministers – be it national leaders or church pastors and deacons – but very little is mentioned about our lesser-known ministers, who are just as important though they do not receive as much attention as the most charismatic, theology-certificate-loaded preacher. Without them, the church will be weakened and countless believers will be lost to the abyss called Worldly Wisdom. Just as our last toes are essential in keeping our balance when we walk, or our last fingers in keeping our grip when we hold the hands of a loved one, so are these lesser-known ministers important in helping the body of Christ to function properly. We hardly see them in action, agonizing in prayer or battling with discouragement. They are the unsung heroes of our faith, without whom it may be impossible for us to know how to say ‘Hallelujah’ affectionately. They are our mentors.

Our mentors take care of people from different walks of life and with all sorts of personalities. Some of their disciples can be really encouraging while some are downright stubborn. Some can be well-mannered, while some are wild-mannered. Some can be caring, while some do not give a care. There are countless ups and downs in the life of a mentor, but he still chooses to soldier on in discipling a believer, whilst putting his hope in God for the disciple to mature and grow closer to Jesus. Sometimes I would think that mentors live a sad existence, especially so when their relationship with their disciples is a one-way road where the mentor is always the giver but never receives anything from the disciple. But there is another side to consider. God made the mentor good and admires the work of His hands. Even if the mentor doesn’t get reciprocated by his disciple in kind, God will bless him and fill him in places where he is running low in morale. He can get everything he needs in mentorship from God.

I found a prose by an anonymous writer which is entitled ‘On the 8th day God created teachers’, and I thought that it was also an apt description of mentors. Here is an excerpt:

“Although taken among men and women, teachers are special. God made several modification and enhancements upon this creation. In general, God made the teacher more robust and durable than other men and women. Included in the modification is the teacher’s ability to arise at very early hours and go to bed late, with no rest in between.

“God embedded in them an enormous amount of patience. Patience when the little monsters called students are too hyperactive to listen; patience to repeat the same direction for over 10 times.

“The All-knowing God gave the teacher a heart bigger than the average men and women. They wipe away the tears of the neglected, insecure and lonely student. They have a heart big enough to forgive students who are caught cheating several times over, a heart to love the kid who screams, ‘I hate this class – it’s boring!’ and to love the student who never greets or says thank you.

“Teachers are made to be tough but gentle too. Tough enough to impose discipline but gentle enough to care. And lastly, God gave the teacher an abundant supply of hope. For God knew that the teacher would always be hoping – hoping for the students to do things correctly; hoping for deliverance.

“When God finished creating the teacher, He looked and admired the work of His hands. And God saw that the teacher was good. Very good. And God smiled, for when He looked at the teacher, He saw into the future. He knew that the future is in the hands of the teacher.”

We don’t need a Global Mentor’s Day to appreciate our mentors. We don’t have to wait for their birthdays to come before we do something special for them. We don’t need to resort to extravagant gifts in order to bless them. A life lived for Christ in righteousness; a prayer generously spoken; a note of gratitude kindly written; or any act of random kindness. That is the meaning behind Hebrews 13:17.
