Sympathy Party

July 26th, 2009 by chesedkel

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your opinion." Romans 12:15 (NKJV)

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do no be proud, but associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited." Romans 12:15 (NIV)

When Job mourned about his loss of children, wealth, and health, his friends gathered at his place to keep him company so that he did not have to mourn alone. There is comfort when friends gather to give the grieving person moral support, but that form of solace was shattered into a thousand shards of glass when Job’s ‘friends’ started to become wise in their own opinion and accused Job of not confessing hidden sins. The apostle Paul probably had that in his mind when he wrote Romans 12:15.

Everyone faces emotional stress that can range from mild burn-out to the loss of a family member. Although God is always beside us to hear about our woes, He also wants us to have friends who are willing to lend a listening ear. All they have to do is to listen intently, empathise with our pain, and seal their lips against saying words too quickly. However, most of us make the common mistake of jumping too quickly to give a solution, form an unfair opinion, or judge too quickly; we stop listening and we want our voices to be heard above the cacophony of the ‘mourner’s’ raging emotions. It is just as bad to leave the ‘mourner’ by himself/herself to grief and mull over an issue. Is it so hard to offer comfort and encouragement to someone who is in distress?

In the art of wholesome living, the apostle Paul tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. It can be inferred that disharmony arises when we become a wet blanket to those who rejoice or when we neglect the welfare of those who mourn. And instead of being full of ourselves and wise in our own opinions, we are to be humble and associate with those who are in need, considering no one better than another.

Here’s a note to those who are weeping in the midst of a difficult situation, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

Raise Your Open Palms, Not Your Fists

July 13th, 2009 by chesedkel

Read Psalm 37:1-9
"Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away." (v.1-2)

I had every reason to feel pitiful, bitter, and angry when my bicycle was stolen. I had saved up for it, waited for a good time to purchase it - a time which, I believe, was arranged by God, had many good thrills on my bicycle, and it was dependable for travelling over many distances. Just when I was going to retrieve it for another peaceful ride back home, my heart sank, like a millstone dropped in an ocean, when the parking lot was empty. The severed cable lock was left at the scene of crime as a signature of the thief’s handiwork. What a cruel blow it was to me!

As I sat down in a daze, the Lord reminded me of the verses from Psalm 37 which He had prompted me to copy on paper that afternoon. It was a memorable lesson about God as the defender of the afflicted.

  • I don’t have to allow my courage to be shaken because of what a criminal had done to me and I don’t have to be envious of his profit; because he will not prevail for long as God puts a stop to his crime spree (v.1-2).
  • I can continue to believe in Jesus and press on in doing good things to all people. As I dwell in His presence, I am secure and assured that He will meet the desires of my heart (v.3-4).
  • As I commit myself to the Lord, He will cause the people around me to notice my righteousness and He will uphold the cause of holy living that I had been fighting for, thus becoming an effective witness to Him (v.5-6).
  • No matter how bad the situation is, no matter how dull the circumstance may seem, no matter how venomous the threats may sound, be still and wait for the Lord; it is only a matter of time before God manifests His plans (v.7).
  • Neither vengeance nor wrath in human hands can prevail; so just believe that the Lord will deal with the perpetrator accordingly. Also do not be anxious, because nothing good comes out of it (v.8).
  • God promises permanent residence in His peaceful abode to those who hope in Him, but doom to the unrepentant sinner. The evil man will not live long to continue in his crimes.

Are you caught in an unfair situation? Then believe in the promises of the Lord Jesus, for they bring a more lasting comfort than any satisfaction that can be gained from vengeance. Rather than shake your angry fists at God and cry out, "Why, God, why?" (not that there is anything wrong with expressing your frustration to Him), open your palms and raise them up to Him and say, "How great You are, O Lord. I know that You are not blind to my situation. You can do more than what I can ever imagine." Although our flesh may feel like lashing back at our enemies or crumple under their mockery, we can choose to walk in the Spirit just as Jesus walked. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and continue steadfastly in prayer (Romans 12:12)
