Hungry And Not Guilty

March 23rd, 2009 by chesedkel

"God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied." -Luke 6:21

"How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey." -Psalm 119:103

A regular reading of the bible during quiet time is a good habit to follow as it makes a Christian wiser by teaching him the way of life that God had ordained it to be. It is also a way of spending personal time with God. As you read the bible for heart knowledge rather than head knowledge, you can hear God speaking to you. With such benefits from having quiet time and reading the bible, no wonder pastors would highly recommend every follower to practise this habit.

What bothers me is that some Christians either feel guilty or feel nothing at all about not reading the bible. In this article, I’m going to deal with the first.

Just as we need food and water to nourish our bodies, we also need spiritual nourishment. The Word of God in the bible is our spiritual food. Because His Word provides hope and encouragement, the psalmist wrote, "How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey." During dark times when the poor are oppressed and the godly are despised or even lose out for not achieving their goals with unscrupulous means, their faith might be shaken to leave them feeling lost and confused. But "the teaching of Your Word gives light, so even the simple can understand." (Psalm 119:130). These are a few reasons why Christians should feed on God’s word voraciously.

Those who feel guilty for not reading the Word of God feel this way because they are aware that they are not making time to spend with God the Forever Patient Lord, who had always been waiting for them to turn to Him. Another possibility is that they fear that they are straying from God’s instructions for righteous living. They have tasted the goodness of God when reading the bible and they know that it is the right thing to do. But the bible never said, "Guilty are those who do not read My Words." There is no reason for a Christian to feel guilty for not reading God’s word. Guilt should not be rooted in his mind because it separates the believer from knowing that Jesus is a merciful God and thus it closes his heart from receiving the blessing of an intimate time with the Lord.

One may feel uneasy for not reading the bible for some time. That is totally fine. What the person is really feeling is actually a hunger for God to touch him. The devil deceives by making him think that God is upset with him and he is therefore guilty. Have you ever felt guilty for skipping a delicious bowl of dessert? Surely not! When we heed that feeling of unease, we should recognise that God is tugging at our hearts to go to the bible, be alone in prayer with Him, to be refilled with peace and contentment. The guilt that some people feel is really only a distortion of the hunger for God.

If you have been hungry for some time and you don’t know how to start reading the bible, try reading Psalm 119 and revel in the glory of God and the pleasures of reading His word. Read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and know that you can be like Jesus’ disciples, experiencing the joy and security of his presence around you. Pray a simple prayer to Jesus and tell him what is on your mind, be it the biggest worry or the sweetest moment you can thank him for. You are hungry now, and you will be satisified.
