When Speed Reading Does No Good

April 24th, 2008 by chesedkel

“So they read distinctly from the book, in the law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the meaning.” Nehemiah 8:8

Every word in the bible is transpired from the inspiration that comes from God. When reading the bible, the Christian receives several things from God, namely instructions on holy living, lessons of compassion, insights into future events and words of God’s promises. The Holy Scripture is a channel by which God communicates with man. When opening the bible to read, you are opening your heart to invite God in. And it is not an affair to be rushed.

During the spiritual reformation in the book of Nehemiah, Ezra led the people to read the Scripture and they read distinctly from the book. The use of the word ‘distinctly’ implies that they read the words clearly and much attention was paid to read the book. Words of God should be read carefully, thoughtfully and distinctly. Never rush when reading Scripture, but let every inspiring thought sink deep into your mind and engrave into your heart. When you rush, you miss out on the full essence of what God wants to say and you may only catch a whiff of a blessing. Remember that Jesus never rushed through a conversation or a meeting with anyone. He chose to take His time for you.

Discipleship & New Convert Management Class

April 22nd, 2008 by Mei Cheng

Hi all,

I hope to ask if you will be interested to attend the upcoming class on Discipleship and New Convert Management. You are encouraged to attend this series of teachings particularly since this is an important focus of the church this year.
What are some key questions that will be answered in this class:

  1. What is the biblical instruction on disciple-making?
  2. What keeps newcomers within the church? How is this done? What do we need to do differently?
  3. How do we make converts into disciples? What is the process? How do we model the life of the disciple? What are the challenges in discipling a postmodern generation?
  4. How should we as disciple-makers relate to new converts? How much control and accountability do we want to have in a mentoring relationship?
  5. How to avoid multiplying your weaknesses in those you are discipling.
  6. How to reinforce the lessons disciples learn? How to work with people who just don’t seem to get it?
  7. Helping new disciples leave behind their past.
  8. Helping new disciples establish biblical commitments (e.g baptism, prayer and bible study, tithing, holiness).

Who can benefit from this class:

This class is appropriate for all those who are interested in disciple-making. Whether you have done it before or not, I believe that you will benefit from this class. If you are a seasoned disciple-maker, your contribution to the many practical issues raised in this class will be appreciated.
If you have never discipled someone, your opinions of the fears, needs and concerns of potential disciple-makers will be very useful in helping all of us understand disciple-making better.

What teaching method will be used:

In this class, I will use a mixture of teaching and discussion to work through this very practical aspect of ministry.

Dates: 23 April 2008 to 21 May 2008 (Every Wednesday, 7.45pm at Church Office)
Fees:
Non-credit students: Free (An offering towards the photocopying of notes will be appreciated.)
Credit students: Normal fees apply

Do register with Mei Cheng via sms or email so that we can prepare any materials if there are any.

Thanks
MM
