Two Are Better Than One

February 29th, 2008 by chesedkel

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12

There were countless times when I retreated into isolation whenever I struggled with emotional and work issues and I found that it does not do me much good. While I may be building castle walls around myself to shut out all possible forms of harm, I am in fact imprisoning myself. Such a deliberate isolation puts me in a gloomy exile, separated from the vibrant world of gaiety where people celebrate friendship.

God gave Adam a life partner named Eve because He saw that it was not good for Adam to be the lone human on earth. It is for the same reason that God placed family members, friends and a spouse in your life. The beauty of relationships lies in the moments of joy and sadness shared between people. When two or more are together, any amount of pain would be lessened and any amount of happiness would be multiplied.

Lord, Restore Me!

February 22nd, 2008 by chesedkel

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then will I teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall be converted and return to you.”
Psalm 51:12-13

A pain had filled David’s heart as he cried out to God with those words written in verses twelve to thirteen of the fifty-first chapter of the book of Psalms. He was asking God to make him joyful again just like the days when he celebrated salvation like a freed soul. I can imagine how much joy had been stolen from David after countless wars that bloodied his hands and his sinful affair with the lady Bathsheba that eventually caused the death of her husband Uriah. Yet despite the guilt and sorrow that David suffered, he chose to ignore the devil’s accusations and asked God to restore him.

Notice that David did not turn to self-help books, but he turned towards God. He needed God’s help to begin a clean slate of life. He needed joy before he could do anything else. The Message translation of Psalm 51:12-13 depicts his cry in a more vivid manner. It reads: “Bring me back from grey exile, put a fresh wind in my sails! Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home.”

I have had times of emotional doldrums that rendered me ineffective and even dispassionate about praying for my family members and other people. Then, it dawned on me that without the joy of God’s salvation, I cannot be willing to pray powerfully and neither would I be interested in outreach efforts. I needed God to stir up willingness in me to worship Him and pray. I needed Him to pull me out of greyness and breathe a fresh life into me so that I can live as one of God!

Perhaps you had gone through an entire week of trials that drained your mood. I pray then, that you would loose your lips and cry out to God, that you would muster all of your spirit and trash against Satan. When you do that, you would beat Satan out of your way and bask in the joy of the Lord’s salvation. You would already have the God-given victory of Christian living in your hands.
